Policy Updates to the SSI Program Take Effect
The below is a summary of the press release from September 30, 2024. View the original press release. The Social Security Administration (SSA) has implemented significant updates to its Supplemental Security Income (SSI) policies, effective immediately. These changes aim to reduce barriers to accessing benefits, streamline eligibility criteria, and increase monthly payments for certain recipients.
Key Updates:
In-Kind Support and Maintenance (ISM) Policy Update: -Food is no longer counted in ISM calculations, removing obstacles for individuals who receive informal food assistance from family or community sources. -This change is projected to increase SSI payments by $131 per month for over 90,000 recipients and expand eligibility for others. Nationwide Expansion of Rental Subsidy Exception: -Previously limited to seven states, this exception now applies nationwide. -Individuals paying a specific amount toward rent will not face ISM deductions for rental assistance. -This policy update could increase payments by $132 per month for approximately 41,000 people and allow more individuals to qualify for SSI.
Expanded Definition of Public Assistance Household: -SNAP benefits now count as public assistance for SSI eligibility purposes. -Households no longer need all members to receive public assistance to be classified as a public assistance household. -These updates could increase payments and eligibility for about 277,000 recipients, while easing the reporting burden on applicants.
These policy improvements reflect the SSA’s efforts to simplify access to SSI and reduce the administrative burden for both the public and the agency. SSI provides essential financial support to individuals with disabilities, blindness, or limited income, helping cover basic needs like food, rent, and healthcare.
