Annual Donation Drive: School on Wheels of Massachusetts (SOWMA)
Every year, our planning committee selects a local organization for the annual donation drive at the spring conference. With the theme of this year's conference being Healthcare & Housing, the planning committee has selected School on Wheels of Massachusetts (SOWMA) SOWMA is on a mission to support the academic, social, and emotional growth of students impacted by homelessness and poverty.
As they look to the next school year, they are estimated to serve 11,000+ students. The Massachusetts Department of Education recently reported that the number of homeless children in the state exceeds 31,000. Every donation matters so they can continue to serve the children in the state of Massachusetts. How can YOU help?
SOWMA prepares grade level backpacks for each student they work with to support their success in the classroom. This could look like a scientific calculator for an older student, or a pencil box full of colored pencils and crayons for the kindergarten students. Below you will find a supply list as well as a link to purchase and directly send items to SOWMA. The items they tend to reorder the most include: two pocket folders, single subject notebooks, pencil boxes, pencil sharpeners with shaving catchers, and the most reordered item of all - a quality backpack. To put it in perspective, SOWMA gives out over 88,000 pencils, 18,500 single subject notebooks, and 11,000 backpacks every year to Massachusetts children.
We encourage you to use the link that sends the items directly to SOWMA, but we will also collect items onsite at the conference registration desk. The items that are collected in person will be delivered to SOWMA.
