Death Cafes are not grief support groups; it is a method focusing on individuals attending and can help residents build community and reduce isolation. Also, we are thrilled to announce that Christa Clapp of the New Hampshire Department of Justice will host our free members only virtual community gathering, Ask Me Anything! Protect Your Wallet, Protect Yourself—a practical conversation on fraud prevention—on June 11 at 2:00 PM ET.

ATTENDANCE CREDIT
At the conference, attendees will use the mobile app, Conference Attendee, to sign in and out of their sessions, complete surveys, connect with their peers, and more. Attendees are required to do these three things in order to receive attendance credit: 1. sign into their workshop and stay for 80% of the time; 2. sign out of their workshop; and 3. complete the survey for each workshop they attend.

NASW
NERSC has been approved to provide NASW authorization credits. All attendees will receive NASW credits. There is no additional cost to attendees. All surveys are due by May 7, 2026. Certificates of attendance will be sent by May 8, 2026. If there is an error on your certificate or you did not receive your certificate, please email info@nerscinc.org by May 22, 2026. Please understand that certificates are unable to be corrected after this date.

Dear NERSC Community, 

I find myself reflecting on the sheer breadth and depth of what it means to sustain an Annual Conference for 28 years. It is, in every sense, a marathon. And right now, we are approaching our own “Heartbreak Hill.”

For those who know the Boston Marathon, Heartbreak Hill rises around mile 20—not the finish line, but the steepest, most demanding climb before the final stretch. That is exactly where we stand today. The finish is in sight, but this moment requires focus, stamina, funding, and heart.

I want to extend my deepest gratitude to our Conference Planning Committee, led with unwavering dedication by our Director of Events, Sam Roccapriore. Their diligence in this final sprint is nothing short of extraordinary. As we navigate another month of rapid shifts at the federal level, our work continues to demand creativity, adaptability, and the willingness to explore new markets. These moments can feel uncertain, yet time and again our community shows how powerfully we come together to meet them. 

I was reminded of this recently while listening to a conversation between Trevor Noah and Dulcé Sloan. They talked about how hope is often the harder choice. Patience is easier. You wait because you know something is coming. Hope requires us to keep moving even when we don’t know what the outcome will be.

That spirit of hopeful action is reflected in the way our members show up for one another, and it’s one of the reasons our 24/7 Member Portal has become such a valuable space. It’s a place where you can access our latest podcasts, ask questions, share insights, explore member‑only materials, and connect with colleagues from across the country long before we gather at the conference. It’s a hub built for collaboration, curiosity, and the kind of collective resilience that defines NERSC.

As we look ahead, I encourage you to stay engaged, stay connected, and continue leaning into the work—even when the path isn’t fully clear.

Congratulations Sage!

As a relatively newer service coordinator (going on five years), I’ve learned that the best approach to a successful program is consistency and time. Showing up for your residents day after day, through the good phone calls and the harder moments of life, is what builds trust and ultimately creates a successful program.

It can be tempting, especially early on, to believe that success is measured by how many programs you launch or how busy your calendar looks. There is often an unspoken pressure to create something big, visible, and impressive, because that is what we tend to see celebrated and promoted.

What we don’t often see highlighted are the quieter moments. The moments where you sit with an older resident who is nearing the end of their time, holding their hand and talking about the meaning of life. Through tears and laughter, with a deep appreciation for the intimacy of that exchange, those are often the moments where we matter most.

I’ve learned that many of the most meaningful moments in this role aren’t planned or documented. They happen in passing conversations, unexpected check-ins, or moments when a resident simply needs someone to listen. These are not moments you can schedule, but they are often the ones residents remember.

Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to organize and provide programming for residents, and there’s no doubt that it has made an impact. But more than the programs themselves, it’s the connections with residents, staff, and volunteers that have been the most memorable.

Consistency looks different for each resident. Some will want nothing to do with you but will gladly participate in an early survey. Others will call daily, just to check in or make small talk about the weather or dinner plans.

Consistency doesn’t require a full calendar or constant programming. Sometimes it looks like predictable office hours, a monthly newsletter, or simply being present in the same spaces at the same times. It looks like remembering names, following up, and showing residents that support doesn’t disappear when things get complicated or inconvenient.

That full spectrum of interaction is equally important to the well-being and longevity of residents living independently.

There will be times, as a service coordinator, when you question whether you’re making a difference. But I promise you, one day, it will click. And when it does, you’ll realize that consistency was never a small thing at all.

This year’s theme feels especially timely. With new SNAP work requirements taking effect and ongoing changes to Temporary Protected Status for certain nations, many of you are likely fielding a flood of questions from residents, as well as their families and friends. That can feel overwhelming.

If this resonates, remember: it is okay not to have all the answers right now. Lean on your state websites, your organizational leadership, and your professional networks — many of whom have updated guidance. For our members, we also have an upcoming free CEU focused on federal-level SNAP changes to support you through these shifts.

Our theme, Reimagining Resident Services, recognizes that we are working in a complex, changing landscape. This year’s conference focuses on reimagining how resident services continue to evolve in response to the needs of residents and communities. Resident Service Coordinators and housing professionals are often working at the intersection of housing stability, access to resources, and resident well-being.  We often find ourselves wearing many hats over the course of a day. Therefore, this conference provides space to share ideas, learn from one another, and explore approaches that strengthen both our work and our impact on the residents we work with and the colleagues we collaborate with.

Throughout the week, you will engage in educational workshops, collaborative conversations, informal opportunities, roleplaying, selfcare, and even some fun to connect with peers who understand the challenges and rewards of this field. Every year our conference planning committee selects a charity partner that aligns with our values and supports individuals and families in our broader community. This year, the conference planning committee chose SHARE of New Hampshire because of their commitment to neighbors facing food insecurity, financial hardship, and urgent everyday needs.

About SHARE
SHARE is a nonprofit organization based in Milford, New Hampshire. Their mission is to provide food, clothing, and emergency financial assistance to people and families who may not qualify for government support yet are still struggling to make ends meet. Through ongoing outreach efforts, SHARE offers essential resources and a compassionate point of contact for individuals in Milford, Amherst, Brookline, and Mont Vernon.

When is the annual NERSC conference?

The 28th Annual NERSC Conference: Reimagining Resident Services is scheduled to take place Tuesday, April 28 - Friday, May 1, 2026.


Where is the annual NERSC conference?

Mohegan Sun Casino and Resort located at 1 Mohegan Sun Boulevard, Uncasville, CT 06382.


When does registration open?

Conference registration opens to members on Monday, January 26, 2026, and to guests/non-members on Monday, February 2, 2026. The last day to register for the conference is Thursday, April 9, 2026.


How much does it cost to attend the conference?

Conference registration is $725 for members and $825 for guests/non-members. If you register by Thursday, March 5, 2026, there is an early bird discount. The early bird discount is $675 for members and $775 for guests/non-members. To attend for a single day, Wednesday or Thursday only, tickets are $425.


Is there a single day registration option?

Yes, you can sign-up to attend a single day. To attend for a single day, Wednesday or Thursday only, tickets are $425.


Is there an early bird discount?

Yes! If you register by Thursday, March 5, 2026, there is an early bird discount. The early bird discount is $675 for members and $775 for guests/non-members.


When is the last day to register for the annual NERSC conference?

The last day to register for the annual conference is Thursday, April 9, 2026.


Is there a hotel room block?

Yes! There is a hotel room block at Mohegan Sun for NERSC attendees. The hotel room rate is $212 plus 15% state occupancy tax and $18 facility fee per night. Attendees usually book a three night stay with arrival on Tuesday, April 28, 2026 and departure on Friday, May 1, 2026. While the last day to book your hotel room is Tuesday, April 7, 2026, please understand that the block may sell out BEFORE this date. This means that if the hotel block sells out, the special discounted rate will no longer be available and the rate shown will reflect the current selling rate. You must both register for the conference and make your hotel accommodations as having one does not guarantee the other.

 
Who attends the conference?

Resident Service Coordinators (RSCs), Social Workers, Property Managers, Resident Engagement Coordinators, Resident Service Directors, Directors of Resident Services, Community Coordinators, and other affordable housing professionals.


Can I pay for the conference by check?

Yes; however, all check payments are due by Thursday, March 5, 2026. To pay by check, select "bill me" as your method of payment on the registration check-out page. If you select "Bill Me" as your method of payment, you are responsible for sending your event invoice to your accounting department to submit payment. Please mail checks to P.O. Box 81, Fall River, MA 02722, and include the invoice number on the check memo. ALL CHECK PAYMENTS MUST BE RECEIVED BY MARCH 5, 2026. IF YOUR CHECK PAYMENT IS NOT RECEIVED, YOUR REGISTRATION WILL BE CANCELLED.


Can I pay for the conference with a credit card?

Yes, credit card payments are accepted and due at the time of registration. The last day to register for the conference is Thursday, April 9, 2026.


Are meals provided at the conference?

Yes. Every effort will be made to accommodate allergy and dietary requests made in advance. Attendees have the option to bring their own meals or purchase food from elsewhere. There will be a breakfast buffet available to registered attendees Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, and a lunch buffet available Wednesday and Thursday. Spouses and guests of registered attendees are NOT permitted to partake.


Are workshops authorized by NASW?

NERSC will be applying for NASW authorization. Upon NERSC’s approval of NASW authorization, all attendees will receive NASW credits. There is no additional cost to attendees.


How do I earn attendance credit and CEUs?

In order to receive attendance credit, attendees are required to: 1. register for the workshop; 2. sign into the workshop by scanning the unique session IN QR code using the Conference App; 3. sign out of the workshop by scanning the unique session OUT QR code using the Conference App; and 4. complete the survey for each workshop. 


Is there a conference app?

Yes, we use the Conference Attendee app developed by Engineerica. You can download the app to your phone through the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store. It is the GREEN icon. You will use the app to view your registered sessions, session locations, scan session QR codes, complete your session surveys, connect with other attendees and sponsors, and receive important event notifications. If you attended last year's conference, it is the same app. You will login using the email address you registered with for this year's conference. Login invitations will be sent to attendees in April.


How many CEUs can I earn at the conference?

You can earn up to 14.5 CEUs in a variety of HUD training areas. 


Is there a maximum attendance limit per workshop?

Yes, there are a maximum number of attendees per workshop. We recommend reviewing the workshop guide, and noting your selected classes before you register for the conference. Workshops will fill up fast. You can only earn attendance credit in the workshops you have registered to attend.


What is the conference cancellation policy?

By March 5, 2026: Registrants may cancel their registration without penalty and receive a full refund. Requests for cancellation must be emailed to info@nerscinc.org.

By April 9, 2026: Registrants may cancel their registration and NERSC will issue a 50% refund. If payment has not yet been received, the registrant is responsible for paying the remaining 50% balance. The registrant will not be able to attend NERSC events, including but not limited to live webinars or future conferences, until the balance is paid. If the registrant is no longer with the company that they registered under, the company is responsible for paying the outstanding balance. Requests for cancellation must be emailed to info@nerscinc.org.

After April 9, 2026: No refunds will be granted. If payment has not yet been received, then the registrant will not be able to attend NERSC events, including but not limited to live webinars or future conferences, until the full balance is paid. If the registrant is no longer with the company that they registered under, the company is responsible for paying the outstanding balance. Requests for cancellation must be emailed to info@nerscinc.org.

If NERSC cancels or postpones the 28th Annual NERSC Conference, we will issue a full refund. To further support NERSC and our educational mission, registrants will be provided the opportunity to convert their registration fee into a 100% registration credit that can be used within 12 months of the date of the event toward any NERSC offering.

We are thrilled to introduce NERSC's new Member Engagement and Social Media Coordinator Cristina Boza!

Cristina joins NERSC with a strong background in nonprofit outreach, community engagement, and social media communications. Originally from Costa Rica and a native Spanish speaker, she has supported early childhood and family programs in Newport, Rhode Island, helping connect parents with valuable resources and services. Cristina has also been actively involved in outreach efforts within the Hispanic community, using culturally informed communication to build trust and engagement.

She brings a global perspective from her years as a flight attendant, during which she traveled to more than 50 countries and developed a deep appreciation for diverse cultures. Outside of work, Cristina enjoys gardening and tending to her own backyard cut-flower garden. She’s excited to help strengthen connections across the NERSC community. Welcome Cristina!

As part of our initiative to celebrate the amazing people and organizations making a real difference in our community, our Marketing Committee has introduced the NERSC Spotlight series. By sharing your story, mission, and impact, you’ll help residents and your fellow RSCs discover valuable resources, connect with upcoming programs, and meet the dedicated individuals working to strengthen our community.


This month we are spotlighting Eugene Austin!

Eugene is the Resident Activities Director at First Realty Management, and brings the heart to the NERSC community. He has been a longtime attendee and member, and he adds thoughtful support to the conference planning committee each year. His presence at meetings and events reflects a clear commitment to Resident Services and to the people who rely on them.

Those who work alongside Eugene see how present he stays. He steps in without hesitation, offers a hand when tasks need attention, and follows through with care. He gives his time, shares ideas, and helps shape programs that support both residents and staff. Here are some events he hosted this year.

The contest winner will have their design featured on the 28th Annual NERSC Conference t-shirt, be recognized on social media, in the conference guide, and live during the conference announcements, and will receive a free t-shirt with their design on it! This year’s overall conference theme is “Reimaging Resident Services”. The dance party theme is “Viva la Vibe”. You may use these themes to influence your design, but it is not required.

There is no entry fee to submit a design. Contestants may submit multiple designs.


Design Guidelines 
1. Must include the words “28th Annual NERSC Conference”.
2. Must be designed for print on the front of the t-shirt only.
3. Must be one color. If selected, design will be printed in one color.
4. Must be submitted as a .jpg, .png, or .pdf to info@nerscinc.org. Please save or rename your artwork filename to include your name (i.e. JohnDoe.png).

By submitting an entry, the artist consents that it is their own original work and that they have all necessary rights and permissions to use any included elements. The NERSC, Inc. board of directors, conference planning committee, and staff reserve the right to make adjustments and alterations to the winning entry. The winning artist grants to the NERSC, Inc. exclusive right to the design, including any modifications thereof, to be used on promotional/marketing and other NERSC, Inc. materials. The artist shall indemnify, defend and hold harmless NERSC, Inc. from and against any and all suits, actions, claims, damages, liabilities, judgments, losses, and expenses, including reasonable attorneys’ fees, arising out of any violation of third party rights including, without limitation, intellectual property infringement, misappropriation, dilution, or violation in connection with NERSC, Inc.'s use, distribution, publishing, sale, or exploitation of the design. As part of our initiative to celebrate the amazing people and organizations making a real difference in our community, our Marketing Committee has introduced the NERSC Spotlight series. By sharing your story, mission, and impact, you’ll help residents and your fellow RSCs discover valuable resources, connect with upcoming programs, and meet the dedicated individuals working to strengthen our community.


This month we are spotlighting Kinship Farms in Massachusetts!


With the help of Wendy and Kinship Farms, the Ipswich and Hamilton Housing Authorities have transformed open spaces into thriving community gardens. These gardens offer more than fresh produce. They have become places for residents to gather, learn, and connect. This summer, a new lower garden bed was added so children could experience hands-on learning about where food comes from and how it grows.

Kinship Farm, a Massachusetts-based non-profit, focuses on cultivating projects that bring together spirituality, relationships, and the environment. Their work centers on building partnerships that strengthen community connections while promoting care for both people and the planet. They collaborate with organizations that share at least two of their focus areas, blending diverse expertise and perspectives to create sustainable community impact.

The team at Kinship Farms believes that collaboration is key to meaningful change. By working alongside local housing authorities, Resident Service Coordinators (RSCs), and community partners, they help residents develop skills, foster self-sufficiency, and build relationships rooted in trust and shared purpose. The community garden projects in Ipswich and Hamilton are strong examples of how this collaboration benefits residents of all ages.

For RSCs, these partnerships have created new ways to connect with residents and local organizations. Through gardening initiatives, RSCs are introducing opportunities for residents to grow food, share recipes, and exchange gardening tips while strengthening relationships within their neighborhoods. The gardens have become gathering places where people check in with one another, share stories, and celebrate small successes together.

Kinship Farms’ mission is centered on cultivating projects that nurture both the environment and the human spirit. Their purpose includes serving communities with compassion, promoting inclusive practices, and celebrating progress and healing. By involving youth and encouraging intergenerational participation, they help create environments where residents of all ages can contribute and feel a sense of belonging.

Their partnership with the Ipswich and Hamilton Housing Authorities reflects the heart of NERSC’s mission. Through these collaborations, RSCs are addressing food insecurity and also building stronger networks of support that extend beyond the growing season.

This kind of partnership shows what is possible when organizations and RSCs work together with shared intention. Residents gain access to fresh produce, new learning experiences, and a deeper sense of community. The gardens have become a source of pride and purpose, fostering both physical and emotional well-being.

As we look toward the seasons ahead, we celebrate how these partnerships continue to grow and inspire. The collaboration between Kinship Farms and local housing authorities demonstrates the lasting value of community connection, care, and shared effort. Through their collective work, residents are not only harvesting vegetables but cultivating community resilience and hope.

Dear NERSC Community, 

As we approach the end of the year, I know many of you are may be feeling the weight of the season already — not only the reflection that naturally comes with the holidays, but also the uncertainty surrounding what is happening at the federal level. When our communities are anxious or afraid, it can take extra energy to show up with steadiness and compassion.

Please remember you are not alone in this work, and your efforts make a profound difference every single day. November is a good time to pause and ask ourselves, are we nurturing the spark that led us to service coordination work in the first place? On behalf of the Board of Directors and staff, we do want to share some sad news. This past weekend, we lost one of the founding members of NERSC, Sam Falzone, whose vision and dedication helped shape NERSC into what it is today. We are deeply saddened by his passing. We will be sharing more about Sam’s impact and legacy in the months ahead.

In times like these, connection matters more than ever. Reach out to your network. When we think of Thanksgiving, we often picture a table surrounded by family and friends sharing a meal. While that image captures the spirit of togetherness, the holiday’s roots reach much deeper. Long before the Pilgrims’ famous feast of 1621, Indigenous peoples across North America celebrated harvest seasons with feasts, dances, and rituals that gave thanks for the bounty of the land.

The first documented Thanksgiving service in North America took place on May 27, 1578, in Newfoundland. Some historians also believe that colonists at the Popham Colony in Maine held a Thanksgiving service in 1607. That same year, settlers in Jamestown, Virginia, gave thanks for their safe arrival in the New World, and in 1610 they held another day of gratitude when a supply ship reached them after a devastating winter. Early colonists in Virginia continued holding Thanksgiving services annually until conflict with local tribes brought the tradition to a halt.

The Pilgrims later held what became the most recognized Thanksgiving in 1621. It was not a formal religious event but a shared feast among settlers and the Wampanoag people. They said grace before eating, played games, and celebrated for three days. Two years later, in 1623, after a long drought threatened their crops, the Pilgrims gathered to pray for rain—and days later, it came. When Captain Miles Standish arrived with supplies and news of another ship on its way, the settlers held another day of thanks on June 30, 1623. This blend of prayer and celebration became the model for future Thanksgiving observances.

For about 150 years, Thanksgiving celebrations were held locally, usually during harvest season. In 1789, Massachusetts called for a day of giving thanks to celebrate the new Constitution and independence. Later that year, President George Washington proclaimed November 26 as a national day of “public thanksgiving and prayer.” Presidents Adams, Madison, and Monroe continued this practice, though Thomas Jefferson declined, citing concerns about the separation of church and state.

Thanksgiving became a permanent national holiday thanks in large part to Sarah Josepha Hale, the editor of Godey’s Lady’s Book. Over 36 years, she published articles, recipes, and letters urging leaders to establish a national day of thanks. Her persistence paid off in 1863 when President Abraham Lincoln, following the Battle of Gettysburg, declared that the last Thursday of November would be a day of national Thanksgiving. Many saw his proclamation as a step toward healing a divided nation during the Civil War.

In 1939, President Franklin D. Roosevelt moved Thanksgiving to the third Thursday of November to lengthen the shopping period before Christmas, but public pushback led Congress to settle the matter in 1941, officially designating the fourth Thursday of November as Thanksgiving Day.

Today, Thanksgiving remains a time for families and communities to gather, reflect, and express gratitude. For Resident Service Coordinators, this season also brings an opportunity to show empathy and support for residents who may be facing new challenges. Many individuals and families have lost or are losing their SNAP benefits, which can make the holidays feel more stressful than in years past. This is a time to reach out, listen, and connect residents with resources that can help lighten the burden. Consider partnering with local grocery stores, food pantries, and community organizations to organize food distributions or share information about assistance programs. Thanksgiving reminds us that gratitude grows stronger when it is shared and that by extending care and compassion, we help create a sense of stability and belonging within our communities.

Article: How will the Federal government shutdown affect my SNAP benefits?

Why do federal government shutdowns affect SNAP benefits?

SNAP benefits are paid for by the federal government through the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food and Nutrition Services (FNS). If the federal government shuts down, the USDA may not send the money to states, which could delay or stop your monthly food benefits. 

Will I still get my October SNAP benefits?

Yes, you will still get your October 2025 SNAP benefits. October benefits for ongoing participants were sent as usual and on time. Individuals who are granted in October will still receive October benefits.

Can I use my existing EBT balance past October?

At this time, SNAP benefits already loaded onto your EBT cards remain available for use to purchase food through Oct. 31, 2025. 

If the federal shutdown continues past Oct. 31, you will still be able to use any SNAP benefits left over from previous months until the federal government reopens.

How will the shutdown affect my November SNAP benefits?

If the federal shutdown keeps going, SNAP benefits for November will not be sent out. November SNAP benefits cannot be issued until the federal shutdown ends or new guidance is provided by FNS.

• If the shutdown ends before November 1, benefits will be issued as usual. 

• If the shutdown ends after November 1, benefits may be delayed but will be paid retroactively (you will get the amount you missed). Once the shutdown ends, benefits will return to the regular schedule.

Will the shutdown affect other DSS benefits or services in November such as TFA? 

No, only SNAP benefits may be delayed in November. You will still receive your other benefits such as TFA.

How can I prepare for the shutdown's effect to my benefits?

Here’s what you can do:

• Check your EBT balance by calling 1-888-328-2666 or use MyDSS
• Stay informed and connected by visiting Food assistance
• If you need help with food, you can call 211 or visit 211
• Continue following all SNAP rules

Can I apply for SNAP during the shutdown if I don’t already get benefits? 

Yes. You can apply for SNAP benefits online, in person, or by mail. Visit MyDSS to learn more about how to apply. If you are approved for SNAP during the shutdown, you may not get your food benefits until the shutdown ends.

Do I still have to meet SNAP requirements during the shutdown? 

Yes, you still need to follow all SNAP rules, like completing your renewal, submitting a Periodic Report Form (PRF), and telling us about the changes you need to report.

What if I need to renew my SNAP benefits and haven't turned in my renewal?

It’s important to submit your renewal right away. You can submit your renewal online at MyDSS in person, or by mail. 

Does the shutdown affect Summer EBT benefits?

No, you can still use any available Summer EBT benefits after October 31st. For more information, visit Summer EBT.

Dear Community Partners,

We are writing to share important updated information from our federal SNAP partner regarding SNAP benefits during the ongoing federal government shutdown.


What We Now Know:

• If you have a balance from previous months, you will still be able to use it after November 1. Carryover benefits already on EBT cards remain accessible.

• No new benefits will be added to cards until the shutdown ends. This means that starting November 1, households will not receive their regular monthly SNAP allocation.

• DSS is still accepting and processing SNAP applications. If someone is approved for benefits for October, those benefits will appear on their card when the federal government reopens.

 
What This Means for Your Clients:

Many of the families you serve will be impacted by this disruption. Those who rely on monthly SNAP benefits to feed their families will face significant hardship beginning November 1. We anticipate increased demand at food pantries and meal programs across the state.

State Response:

• This $3 million in emergency funding will help Connecticut Foodshare expand its capacity to meet urgent needs.

• We are working closely with Connecticut Foodshare and partners across the state to ensure no one falls through the cracks.

• DSS will continue to monitor the situation and coordinate our response with food security partners statewide.
