That is the magic of NERSC.

In a very chaotic environment, the 28th Annual Conference: Reimagining Resident Services was a beautiful reminder of how we can lean into our communities and each other to make things happen for our sites and residents.

Gratitude hardly feels sufficient for our sponsors, exhibitors, speakers, and especially our NERSC Team, Conference Planning Committee, and Board of Directors. Your dedication is what makes this conference and our year-round programming possible.

This summer will bring even more exciting news and announcements. But as we enter May, Mental Health Month, I encourage you to stay connected to the practices, peers, and resources that help you support your residents with confidence and care.

Have you ever wondered what is a Death Café? Our next quarterly webinar takes place June 4 at 2:00 PM ET. Death Cafes are not grief support groups; it is a method focusing on individuals attending and can help residents build community and reduce isolation. The webinar is free to members and available to non-members for a small fee.

Also, we are thrilled to announce that Christa Clapp of the New Hampshire Department of Justice will host our free members only virtual community gathering, Ask Me Anything! Protect Your Wallet, Protect Yourself—a practical conversation on fraud prevention—on June 11 at 2:00 PM ET.

If you haven’t visited the NERSC Member Portal, now is the perfect time to stop in, say hello, and explore our growing library of resources—including podcasts on aging, pest management, food access, and more.

Sincerely,
Kate Cantwell
NERSC Executive Director

Letter from the Executive Director April 2026 | NERSC | Resident Services | Affordable Housing

It is, in every sense, a marathon. And right now, we are approaching our own “Heartbreak Hill.”

For those who know the Boston Marathon, Heartbreak Hill rises around mile 20—not the finish line, but the steepest, most demanding climb before the final stretch. That is exactly where we stand today. The finish is in sight, but this moment requires focus, stamina, funding, and heart.

I want to extend my deepest gratitude to our Conference Planning Committee, led with unwavering dedication by our Director of Events, Sam Roccapriore. Their diligence in this final sprint is nothing short of extraordinary. Every detail, every decision, every email is part of what makes NERSC’s Annual Conference a national standard for excellence, supported by the generosity of sponsors and exhibitors who make this experience possible such as Wellcare, Maloney Properties, Connecticut Housing Finance Authority, Beacon Communities, Connected Communities, and MassHousing.

And as if the conference were not enough, April brings an abundance of good news for NERSC.

With nearly 30 years of service to Resident Service Coordinators and the broader housing community, we are honored to share that NERSC has been selected to receive the 2026 Gloria Cavanaugh Award for Excellence in Training and Education from the American Society on Aging.

This recognition belongs to all of you—our staff, our partner organizations, and the board members past and present who built the foundation, strengthened the mission, and carried forward the reputation that NERSC holds today. It is a testament to decades of commitment to high-quality training, community building, and elevating the profession of service coordination.

As we prepare for our own conference at Mohegan Sun on April 28th, I encourage you to stay connected to our ongoing programming. New podcast episodes dropping soon feature John Painter’s winding journey from lobster boats to community leadership, Dr. Timothy Holohan’s insights on hospital-to-home transitions and whether pain should define aging, and Carol Marak’s powerful exploration of solo aging and the peer-led supports that transform isolation into empowerment—together offering service coordinators a rich tapestry of stories, tools, and perspectives that deepen understanding and strengthen community.

Thank you for being part of this journey—through every mile, every hill, and every moment of growth. Together, we continue to build something remarkable.

Sincerely,
Kate Cantwell
NERSC Executive Director

Connect With Your State RSC Association at the NERSC Conference

How Resident Service Coordinators Can Connect With State RSC Associations at the NERSC Conference

When you attend the NERSC Annual Conference this spring, you are joining a community of Resident Service Coordinators who understand the work you do every day. The conference offers education, practical tools, and time with peers who face many of the same challenges and opportunities in affordable housing.

One of the most valuable connections you can make during the conference is with your state Resident Service Coordinator association.

State associations provide a space for you to stay connected with professionals working in your region. These groups host trainings, share local resources, and create opportunities for Resident Service Coordinators to learn from one another throughout the year. Many also organize regular meetings or events where RSCs can discuss policy updates, resident needs, and new program ideas.

NERSC serves a broader role across the region by bringing housing professionals together for education and professional development. Through conferences, webinars, and shared resources, NERSC connects Resident Service Coordinators across many states who are committed to strengthening resident services and improving quality of life in affordable housing communities.

When you participate in both networks, you gain the benefit of regional education through NERSC and the local collaboration offered by your state association. Together, these connections strengthen the profession and support the work you do with residents.

At this year’s conference, take time to introduce yourself to colleagues from your state and ask about their local association. Many members find new training opportunities, mentorship, and long term professional relationships through these groups.

Below are several state organizations serving Resident Service Coordinators across the Northeast region.

Connecticut
Connecticut Association of Resident Service Coordinators in Housing (CARSCH)
Website: https://www.carsch.org

Rhode Island
Rhode Island Service Coordinator Collaborative (RISCC)
Website: https://www.riscc.org

Massachusetts
Massachusetts Association of Resident Service Coordinators in Housing (MARSCH)
Website: https://www.marschlink.net

Maine
Maine Resident Service Coordinator Association (MRSCA)
Website: https://www.maineresidentservicecoordinator.com

New Hampshire
New Hampshire Association of Professional Service Coordinators (NHAPSC)
Website: https://nhapsc.org/

Vermont
Vermont Resident Service Coordinators (VRSC)
Website: https://vhfa.org/managing-agents/resources/resident-service-coordination

New York
New York State Association of Resident Service Coordinators (NYSARSC)
Website: https://www.nysarsc.com

If you are already a member of your state association, the NERSC conference offers a chance to reconnect with colleagues and strengthen those relationships. If you are not yet involved, the conference is a good time to learn how your state network supports Resident Service Coordinators throughout the year.

Professional growth in resident services depends on connection, shared learning, and strong networks. NERSC and your state association work together to support that goal.

These moments can feel uncertain, yet time and again our community shows how powerfully we come together to meet them.

I was reminded of this recently while listening to a conversation between Trevor Noah and Dulcé Sloan. They talked about how hope is often the harder choice. Patience is easier. You wait because you know something is coming. Hope requires us to keep moving even when we don’t know what the outcome will be.

That spirit of hopeful action is reflected in the way our members show up for one another, and it’s one of the reasons our 24/7 Member Portal has become such a valuable space. It’s a place where you can access our latest podcasts, ask questions, share insights, explore member‑only materials, and connect with colleagues from across the country long before we gather at the conference. It’s a hub built for collaboration, curiosity, and the kind of collective resilience that defines NERSC.

As we look ahead, I encourage you to stay engaged, stay connected, and continue leaning into the work—even when the path isn’t fully clear.

That’s where our strength has always been.

Sincerely,
Kate Cantwell
NERSC Executive Director

NERSC Announces 2026 Conference Shirt Design Contest Winner Sage Maier

NERSC Announces 2026 Conference Shirt Design Contest Winner Sage Maier

Each year, the NERSC conference shirt design contest gives members an opportunity to share their creativity and reflect the spirit of resident services. The designs submitted come from professionals who understand the work, the relationships, and the responsibility carried by Resident Service Coordinators each day.

For 2026, NERSC is proud to recognize Sage Maier, BSW, Resident Services Coordinator with Elderly Housing Management, Inc. in Connecticut, as the winner of this year’s design contest.

Sage’s design reflects the steady presence Resident Service Coordinators provide within their communities. In sharing the inspiration behind the artwork, Sage spoke about the role RSCs often hold for residents who are facing uncertainty or challenges. When situations feel confusing or overwhelming, many residents return to the familiar support of their Resident Service Coordinator.

The design centers on a compass and a home. These elements represent guidance and belonging, two ideas that sit at the core of resident services. The message behind the design speaks to the daily work of helping residents regain their footing and feel seen, supported, and connected.

Members of the NERSC community will recognize this experience. Resident Service Coordinators serve as trusted guides within housing communities. They listen, respond, and help residents move forward during moments when direction and reassurance matter most.

Sage’s design captures this sense of purpose in a clear and thoughtful way. It reflects the values shared across the NERSC network and the commitment Resident Service Coordinators bring to their work every day.

NERSC extends sincere thanks to Sage for contributing this design and for the care shown in representing the profession. We are grateful to every member who submitted a design this year and shared their creativity with the community.

The winning design will be featured on the official shirt for the 2026 NERSC Annual Conference. Members will see it throughout the week as we gather, learn from one another, and continue strengthening resident services together.

Congratulations Sage!

Why Consistency Matters in Resident Services

Why Consistency Matters in Resident Services | Service Coordinators | Affordable Housing Professionals | NERSC

Like most Resident Service Coordinators, you’re given a desk, some form of electronic device, and if you’re lucky, a list of residents. Sure, there are guidelines online for your program and a general job description, but beyond that, many of us are left asking, “Now what?”

As a relatively newer service coordinator (going on five years), I’ve learned that the best approach to a successful program is consistency and time. Showing up for your residents day after day, through the good phone calls and the harder moments of life, is what builds trust and ultimately creates a successful program.

It can be tempting, especially early on, to believe that success is measured by how many programs you launch or how busy your calendar looks. There is often an unspoken pressure to create something big, visible, and impressive, because that is what we tend to see celebrated and promoted.

What we don’t often see highlighted are the quieter moments. The moments where you sit with an older resident who is nearing the end of their time, holding their hand and talking about the meaning of life. Through tears and laughter, with a deep appreciation for the intimacy of that exchange, those are often the moments where we matter most.

I’ve learned that many of the most meaningful moments in this role aren’t planned or documented. They happen in passing conversations, unexpected check-ins, or moments when a resident simply needs someone to listen. These are not moments you can schedule, but they are often the ones residents remember.

Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to organize and provide programming for residents, and there’s no doubt that it has made an impact. But more than the programs themselves, it’s the connections with residents, staff, and volunteers that have been the most memorable.

Consistency looks different for each resident. Some will want nothing to do with you but will gladly participate in an early survey. Others will call daily, just to check in or make small talk about the weather or dinner plans.

Consistency doesn’t require a full calendar or constant programming. Sometimes it looks like predictable office hours, a monthly newsletter, or simply being present in the same spaces at the same times. It looks like remembering names, following up, and showing residents that support doesn’t disappear when things get complicated or inconvenient.

That full spectrum of interaction is equally important to the well-being and longevity of residents living independently.

There will be times, as a service coordinator, when you question whether you’re making a difference. But I promise you, one day, it will click. And when it does, you’ll realize that consistency was never a small thing at all.

February Fun Facts and Dates for Community Programming | Resident Engagement | Resident Programs

February Fun Facts and Dates for Community Programming | Resident Engagement | Resident Programs

For such a short month, February has a surprisingly full calendar. Below are some of the most well known dates, along with a few interesting ones worth highlighting. There are many more celebrations throughout the month, but these stood out as both familiar and fun to explore.

February 2. Groundhog Day
Groundhog Day has roots far older than Punxsutawney Phil. In ancient European traditions, particularly in Germany, people looked to animals like badgers or bears rather than groundhogs. The day was known as Candlemas. If the animal saw its shadow, winter was expected to continue.

When German immigrants brought the tradition to Pennsylvania, the groundhog became the star. In 1887, the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club was formed to keep the tradition alive. The club’s founder, Clymer H. Freas, was also the editor of The Punxsutawney Spirit newspaper. The famous groundhog was named Punxsutawney Phil, who, according to legend, will turn 140 years old on February 2, 2026.

In reality, groundhogs live two to three years in the wild and up to twelve years in captivity. Groundhog Day continues to be celebrated every February 2. Like many others, this writer is hoping Phil does not see his shadow.

February 8. Super Bowl Sunday
For New England Patriots fans and Seattle Seahawks fans, this day feels like a holiday of its own.

February 12. Abraham Lincoln’s Birthday
Although President Lincoln’s birthday falls on February 12, it is officially observed later in the month on Presidents’ Day.

February 14. Valentine’s Day
Valentine’s Day, also known as the Feast of Saint Valentine, honors a third century priest who became a martyr for secretly marrying soldiers. At the time, married men were considered poor soldiers and were not allowed to wed.

Before his execution, Saint Valentine wrote a farewell note to the daughter of his captor and signed it, “From your Valentine.” That simple phrase is still used today.

February 15. Susan B. Anthony’s Birthday

February 15. Canada’s Flag Day

February 16, 2026. Presidents’ Day
This federal holiday honors both George Washington, born February 22, and Abraham Lincoln, born February 12.

February 17. Lunar New Year

February 17. Ramadan Begins
Ramadan is the holiest month in the Islamic calendar. It is a 29 to 30 day period of fasting, prayer, and reflection. Muslims around the world abstain from food, drink, and negative behaviors from dawn to sunset. Ramadan marks the month the Quran was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad and is one of the Five Pillars of Islam. In 2026, Ramadan begins with the first sighting of the crescent moon and ends at sunset on March 18.

February 17. Mardi Gras
Also known as Fat Tuesday, Mardi Gras is the final day of feasting before the Christian season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday.

February 20. National Love Your Pet Day

February 22. George Washington’s Birthday
Our first president’s birthday is officially recognized earlier in the month on Presidents’ Day.

February 29. Leap Year
The history of Leap Year dates back to ancient Rome. King Numa originally designed months with 29 days, since even numbers were considered unlucky. However, the total number of days still added up to an even number. February, a month associated with honoring the dead, was shortened to 28 days.

Later, it was discovered that the Earth takes 365.2422 days to orbit the sun. In 45 BC, Julius Caesar worked with astronomers to add an extra day every four years to correct the calendar. Without this adjustment, the calendar would drift about 25 days every 100 years, throwing seasons out of alignment. This system became known as the Julian calendar.

By 1582, Pope Gregory XIII recognized further inaccuracies. The Julian calendar was slightly too long by about 11 minutes per year, which added up to a ten day shift by the 16th century. The calendar was revised again, creating the system we use today, with an extra day added every four years.

February was chosen for this extra day because it was originally the final month of the Roman calendar. That is how February 29 came to be.

People born on Leap Day celebrate a true birthday once every four years. In other years, they often choose February 28 or March 1. These individuals are often called leaplings or leapers.

Exploring the history behind February’s dates turned out to be both fun and informative. Many of these observances can also inspire ideas for resident programs and community events.

While researching February, I also came across a website called Sprout Marketing, which is geared toward property managers and resident services teams. The site includes a mix of paid and free content, with several ideas available to listen to at no cost. For anyone interested, the February resident event ideas page is available here. I am not in any way affiliated with this site.

Annual Donation Drive: SHARE of New Hampshire

Every year our conference planning committee selects a charity partner that aligns with our values and supports individuals and families in our broader community. This year, the conference planning committee chose SHARE of New Hampshire because of their commitment to neighbors facing food insecurity, financial hardship, and urgent everyday needs.

About SHARE
SHARE is a nonprofit organization based in Milford, New Hampshire. Their mission is to provide food, clothing, and emergency financial assistance to people and families who may not qualify for government support yet are still struggling to make ends meet. Through ongoing outreach efforts, SHARE offers essential resources and a compassionate point of contact for individuals in Milford, Amherst, Brookline, and Mont Vernon.

SHARE’s work happens every day through dedicated volunteers and community partnerships. They help people access nourishing food, basic clothing, and support during difficult moments. Their mission focuses on filling critical gaps in the safety net, providing services with dignity and respect to all community members.

How YOU Can Help
You can make a direct impact by contributing items from SHARE’s most needed categories. This year SHARE has asked for donations that support health and beauty, feminine hygiene, and gluten-free food items. These kinds of products are often in short supply yet essential for daily wellbeing. Including items like shampoo or conditioner, toothpaste, body wash, feminine care products, and gluten-free pantry staples ensures that SHARE can meet diverse needs among the families they assist.

Alongside physical item contributions, monetary donations are accepted. A direct link to SHARE’s secure online donation page is available here. Your financial gift helps SHARE maintain programs that respond quickly when someone needs food, clothing, or emergency support most.

We encourage you to use the link that sends the items directly to SHARE, but we will also collect items onsite at the conference registration desk. We move from the energy of the holidays straight into opening invitations for our 28th Annual Conference. This year’s theme, Reimagining Resident Services, reflects where many of us stand after a year marked by rapid change and new demands.

The conference offers space to pause, reflect, and look ahead with purpose. It creates time away from daily responsibilities to reconnect with colleagues, strengthen teams, and refocus on the work we share. We are grateful to the sponsors and partners who committed in 2025 and made this gathering possible.

As the year begins, our work continues beyond the conference. We remain focused on ensuring membership brings real value. Please plan to join upcoming free CEU opportunities, including sessions on SNAP and other essential benefits. These trainings support your daily work and the residents you serve.

We look forward to the year ahead and to continuing this work together.

Sincerely,
Kate Cantwell
NERSC Executive Director

Real RSC Event: Resident Led Thanksgiving in New Hampshire

Real RSC Event: Resident-Led Thanksgiving

Residents at the Public Housing community in Berlin, New Hampshire brought warmth and connection to their building with a home delivered Thanksgiving meal they planned and prepared themselves. Their idea was simple. Bring neighbors together during the holiday through a shared meal. What they created reached even further.

A group of residents met, built the menu, organized ingredients, and pulled together full meal packages for more than forty neighbors. Local businesses and community members stepped in with generous donations. Every detail reflected care. Residents took on the turkey and sides and added homemade rolls and cookies from volunteers. They wanted the presentation to feel special. Each meal included a printed tag, a Thanksgiving card made by the local Girl Scout troop, and a festive potholder.

The team worked together and divided responsibilities. Some cooked. Some assembled packages. Others organized delivery routes throughout the building. The process stayed smooth and focused and every neighbor received a full Thanksgiving meal delivered right to their door.

As the Resident Service Coordinator, I supported the planning meetings, coordinated donations, and stayed present as residents led each step. Their teamwork shaped the event and moved the project from a good idea to a meaningful experience for the building.

This meal showed the strength of resident led work. It gave neighbors a holiday meal they might not have had and strengthened connections throughout the community. The project will stay with many of us for a long time.

By sharing your story, mission, and impact, you’ll help residents and your fellow RSCs discover valuable resources, connect with upcoming programs, and meet the dedicated individuals working to strengthen our community.

This month we are spotlighting Kinship Farms in Massachusetts!

With the help of Wendy and Kinship Farms, the Ipswich and Hamilton Housing Authorities have transformed open spaces into thriving community gardens. These gardens offer more than fresh produce. They have become places for residents to gather, learn, and connect. This summer, a new lower garden bed was added so children could experience hands-on learning about where food comes from and how it grows.

Kinship Farm, a Massachusetts-based non-profit, focuses on cultivating projects that bring together spirituality, relationships, and the environment. Their work centers on building partnerships that strengthen community connections while promoting care for both people and the planet. They collaborate with organizations that share at least two of their focus areas, blending diverse expertise and perspectives to create sustainable community impact.

The team at Kinship Farms believes that collaboration is key to meaningful change. By working alongside local housing authorities, Resident Service Coordinators (RSCs), and community partners, they help residents develop skills, foster self-sufficiency, and build relationships rooted in trust and shared purpose. The community garden projects in Ipswich and Hamilton are strong examples of how this collaboration benefits residents of all ages.

For RSCs, these partnerships have created new ways to connect with residents and local organizations. Through gardening initiatives, RSCs are introducing opportunities for residents to grow food, share recipes, and exchange gardening tips while strengthening relationships within their neighborhoods. The gardens have become gathering places where people check in with one another, share stories, and celebrate small successes together.

Kinship Farms’ mission is centered on cultivating projects that nurture both the environment and the human spirit. Their purpose includes serving communities with compassion, promoting inclusive practices, and celebrating progress and healing. By involving youth and encouraging intergenerational participation, they help create environments where residents of all ages can contribute and feel a sense of belonging.

Their partnership with the Ipswich and Hamilton Housing Authorities reflects the heart of NERSC’s mission. Through these collaborations, RSCs are addressing food insecurity and also building stronger networks of support that extend beyond the growing season.

This kind of partnership shows what is possible when organizations and RSCs work together with shared intention. Residents gain access to fresh produce, new learning experiences, and a deeper sense of community. The gardens have become a source of pride and purpose, fostering both physical and emotional well-being.

As we look toward the seasons ahead, we celebrate how these partnerships continue to grow and inspire. The collaboration between Kinship Farms and local housing authorities demonstrates the lasting value of community connection, care, and shared effort. Through their collective work, residents are not only harvesting vegetables but cultivating community resilience and hope.

Submit your spotlight today >

When our communities are anxious or afraid, it can take extra energy to show up with steadiness and compassion.

Please remember you are not alone in this work, and your efforts make a profound difference every single day. November is a good time to pause and ask ourselves, are we nurturing the spark that led us to service coordination work in the first place? To help you reflect, recharge, and reconnect, I encourage you to take advantage of our free online CEU opportunity: Essential Skills for Professional Success on November 13th and upcoming Ask Me Anything sessions about Career Paths in Affordable Housing. This past weekend, we lost one of the founding members of NERSC, Sam Falzone, whose vision and dedication helped shape NERSC into what it is today. We are deeply saddened by his passing. While that image captures the spirit of togetherness, the holiday’s roots reach much deeper. Long before the Pilgrims’ famous feast of 1621, Indigenous peoples across North America celebrated harvest seasons with feasts, dances, and rituals that gave thanks for the bounty of the land.

The first documented Thanksgiving service in North America took place on May 27, 1578, in Newfoundland. Some historians also believe that colonists at the Popham Colony in Maine held a Thanksgiving service in 1607. That same year, settlers in Jamestown, Virginia, gave thanks for their safe arrival in the New World, and in 1610 they held another day of gratitude when a supply ship reached them after a devastating winter. Early colonists in Virginia continued holding Thanksgiving services annually until conflict with local tribes brought the tradition to a halt.

The Pilgrims later held what became the most recognized Thanksgiving in 1621. It was not a formal religious event but a shared feast among settlers and the Wampanoag people. They said grace before eating, played games, and celebrated for three days. Two years later, in 1623, after a long drought threatened their crops, the Pilgrims gathered to pray for rain—and days later, it came. When Captain Miles Standish arrived with supplies and news of another ship on its way, the settlers held another day of thanks on June 30, 1623. This blend of prayer and celebration became the model for future Thanksgiving observances.

For about 150 years, Thanksgiving celebrations were held locally, usually during harvest season. In 1789, Massachusetts called for a day of giving thanks to celebrate the new Constitution and independence. Later that year, President George Washington proclaimed November 26 as a national day of “public thanksgiving and prayer.” Presidents Adams, Madison, and Monroe continued this practice, though Thomas Jefferson declined, citing concerns about the separation of church and state.

Thanksgiving became a permanent national holiday thanks in large part to Sarah Josepha Hale, the editor of Godey’s Lady’s Book. Over 36 years, she published articles, recipes, and letters urging leaders to establish a national day of thanks. Her persistence paid off in 1863 when President Abraham Lincoln, following the Battle of Gettysburg, declared that the last Thursday of November would be a day of national Thanksgiving. Many saw his proclamation as a step toward healing a divided nation during the Civil War.

In 1939, President Franklin D. Roosevelt moved Thanksgiving to the third Thursday of November to lengthen the shopping period before Christmas, but public pushback led Congress to settle the matter in 1941, officially designating the fourth Thursday of November as Thanksgiving Day.

Today, Thanksgiving remains a time for families and communities to gather, reflect, and express gratitude. For Resident Service Coordinators, this season also brings an opportunity to show empathy and support for residents who may be facing new challenges. Many individuals and families have lost or are losing their SNAP benefits, which can make the holidays feel more stressful than in years past. This is a time to reach out, listen, and connect residents with resources that can help lighten the burden. Consider partnering with local grocery stores, food pantries, and community organizations to organize food distributions or share information about assistance programs. Thanksgiving reminds us that gratitude grows stronger when it is shared and that by extending care and compassion, we help create a sense of stability and belonging within our communities.

Sources:
Bradford, William.
